Hammond Citizenship Attorney

Becoming a United States citizen can be a difficult and confusing process, much like obtaining a green card and permanent resident status. The entire process can feel daunting, but with the assistance of a skilled Hammond citizenship attorney, it can become a lot less intimidating.

There are countless benefits to retaining an experienced Illinois immigration attorney prior to submitting your application. If you attempt to apply and have a criminal arrest on your record, this can result in the start of removal proceedings, even if you have legal permanent resident status in the country.

At Kriezelman Burton & Associates, LLP, we have been assisting clients for over 40 years with all of their immigration needs. Our team will provide personalized representation and offer you step-by-step guidance and assistance to help you gain your United States citizenship.

Requirements and Process to Become a Citizen

In order to apply for United States citizenship, you need to meet certain requirements first. These include:

  • You must be 18 years old when filing your applications with the USCIS.
  • You have to be a permanent resident with a valid green card for at least five years, or it can be three years if you received your green card because you are married to a United States citizen.
  • You need to at least speak, write, and understand basic English (unless you have a disability).
  • You need to understand civics and U.S. history.
  • You have to have good moral character, which means verifying any past criminal and/or personal issues will not derail your plans to become a citizen.

If you meet the above qualifications, then you can submit an application for citizenship along with passport photos, a copy of your green card, the required filing fees, and any necessary supporting documentation. After one to two months, you will be notified that you need to come in for fingerprints and biometrics information.

You will then be scheduled for an interview which can take anywhere from several months to over a year to get. The interviewers will test your knowledge of U.S. history, government, and how well you can speak, write and read English. In order to be considered for approval, you have to pass all the tests. If approved, you will be notified to attend a swearing-in ceremony where you will receive your citizenship certificate.
