However, before you can determine if you are eligible to apply for and receive a green card, it&#8217;s imperative that you understand what one is and what it means to hold one. Someone who is granted a green card is a <a href=\"https:\/\/krilaw.com\/services\/immigration-lawyers-chicago\/permanent-residency\/\">permanent resident<\/a>. They are legally authorized to live and work in the United States permanently. A green card is simply proof of their status <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/green-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fiances, widowers, and abused spouses of U.S. citizens are also sometimes eligible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Through Your Job<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common way to obtain a green card is through <a href=\"https:\/\/krilaw.com\/services\/employment-immigration-lawyers-chicago\/\">employment in the U.S.<\/a> Immigrant workers, such as the following may apply:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First preference immigrant workers, such as those who:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have extraordinary ability in the areas of sciences, art, education, business, or athletics\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are an outstanding professor or researcher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are a multinational executive or manager who meets specific criteria\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second preference immigrant workers, such as those who:\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are in a profession that necessitates an advanced degree\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have exceptional abilities in the sciences, arts, or business\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are pursuing a national interest waiver\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third preference immigrant worker, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skilled workers (your job requires a minimum of two years of work experience or training)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionals whose jobs require at least a U.S. bachelor&#8217;s\u202fdegree or a foreign equivalent and they are a member of that profession\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unskilled worker who performs unskilled labor requiring less than two years of work experience or training<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immigrant investors and doctors with a Physician National Interest Waiver are also eligible. This waiver applies to those who meet certain eligibility requirements, such as committing to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working full-time in clinical practice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serving in a designated underserved area for a predetermined time period\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>As a Special Immigrant<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s best to double-check with your Chicago immigration attorney about whether or not you fit in this category.
