How Can I Obtain a Visa?
What do you need to do in order to obtain a visa? There are many different types of visas that permit you to enter into (and, depending upon your specific set of circumstances), to live and to work in the United States. As a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of State explains, there are generally two different types of visa categories:
- Nonimmigrant visa categories; and
- Immigrant visa categories.
When it comes to nonimmigrant visas, the categories are extremely vast in number. In brief, however, a person can obtain a nonimmigrant visa for many different purposes, such as to compete in an athletic event, to conduct business, to engage in work or employment, to receive medical treatment, to conduct medical work, to engage in tourism, to study as a student, to seek protection if you are a victim of criminal activity or human trafficking, or to reunite with a spouse or children who already are lawful permanent residents. These are just some of the many purposes for which a nonimmigrant visa can be granted.
The list of categories for immigrant visas is still somewhat expansive, but it is shorter than the list of persons for whom a nonimmigrant visa may be issued. There are three overarching categories of immigrant visas: 1) immediate relative and family-sponsored visas, 2) employer-sponsored visas for the purposes of employment, and 3) other immigrants. Within those categories, the U.S. Department of State lists the following subcategories:
- Spouse of a U.S. citizen;
- Fiancé of a U.S. citizen who plans to live in the U.S.;
- Adopted child;
- Other family members of U.S. citizen(s);
- Other family members of lawful permanent residents;
- Employees who have been sponsored by an employer, including for example religious workers or translators;
- Diversity immigrant visas; and
- Returning residents.
