The Benefits of DACA
DACA offers considerable benefits to those who are eligible to apply for immigration relief. Most importantly, DACA recipients are granted two-year lawful status to live and work within the United States. With this comes several different specific benefits, including the ability to apply for a driver’s license, among others. Additionally, DACA recipients can seek approval to leave and re-enter the United States.
The Eligibility Requirements
DACA is designed to benefit undocumented immigrants who were brought into the United States as children. Only a limited amount of people qualify for immigration relief under this program. Under the policy, you must meet all of the following requirements to be eligible to apply for DACA:
- You must have entered the United States before the age of 16;
- You must have been living in the United States since at least 2007;
- You must have been 31 years old or younger as of June of 2012;
- You must currently be attending high school, have already graduated from high school or have obtained a GED; and
- You cannot have committed any serious criminal offense while in the United States.
Where Does DACA Stand?
DACA is currently in flux. While DACA was originally created in 2012 by the Obama Administration, in September of 2017, President Trump announced that DACA was being “ended” and that no new DACA applications would be accepted. As of now, the future of DACA is very much unclear. There have been indications from President Trump, Congressional Democrats and Congressional Republicans that a deal that restores DACA may be possible. Still, whether one will be reached remains to be seen.
